I’ve been experimenting with YouTube off-and-on for a while. At first, video editing felt overwhelming, but after much trial and error, it got easier – not easy, but easier. Deciding what to film, choosing sound, and setting up the correct lighting are all things I’m still learning. The key is I’m still learning. I don’t have all the knowledge yet, but that’s okay because I’m adding to my knowledge when I have the chance.
Recently, I’ve been educating myself by watching YouTube content creators who have monetized channels and give actionable advice. Let me clarify that I’m not talking about giant channels that have gone viral and have millions of viewers. That isn’t the kind of creator I want to learn from because I don’t want to have a viral channel and millions of viewers. I would prefer to have a smaller number of dedicated viewers. I’m looking for connection over numbers.
I want to make a multi-niche channel that will reflect my blogs, so I seek content creators who give me the best ideas for being a smaller, multi-niche channel. Whatever you want to create on YouTube or any other platform, look for creators who are doing something similar. If they reflect the kind of creator you want to be, they can be a “digital mentor” for you. You don’t have to follow their plans or tips exactly, but you can choose the best tips for your kind of content and plan.
Learn from the people who are already doing what you want to do because they have already traveled the path ahead and are aware of the bumps and turns in the road. Keep studying their tips, information, and content because they’re successful for a reason.

- The Productive Homemaker: Monetizing YouTube in 45 Days – This video is a couple of years old, but honestly, her basic tips and encouragement about how she just started a YouTube channel on a shoestring budget inspired me to just start filming with what I had available.
- Rob the Maritimer: Why People Over 40 Must Start a YouTube Channel & Don’t Tell Anyone About Your YouTube Channel! – His channel is full of practical YouTube advice, and a couple of videos in particular are great for tips so I’ve listed those two here. He also was one of the first content creators I watched who addressed the upcoming change in 2027 about increased viewing hours to get monetized on YouTube.
- Silver and Solo: I Monetized My Channel in 2024 and Here’s What Happened – She covers a variety of topics on her channel that include being an introvert, living single, enjoying retirement, and how she does her YouTube channel.
- Kayla Carlile: How I Accidentally Became a Full-Time YouTuber – Kayla is an artist and a successful YouTube content creator. I recently came across her video on how she became a YouTube creator and how she would go about it now that she has so much experience.
- Dare to Flourish: I Monetized My YouTube Channel in 12 Weeks (The Exact Plan I Used) – This is another recent addition to my YouTube how-to playlist. I appreciate that she set a goal that wasn’t unreasonable, and she delivered. Goals matter!
- Jessica Stansberry: Multi-passionate Creators ARE the Future! Here’s how to make it all work. – Being someone who has a variety of interests, I don’t want to narrow down to one niche, and I watch many creators who don’t do that and still succeed. This video from Jessica talks about that, and she has even more helpful hints and tips in her other videos.
