Health and Fitness for the Freelancer: Overcoming the Plateau

If you have ever been on a weight loss journey, then you have hit the plateau before. As a matter of fact, you’ve probably camped out on it and waited for a bit. We’ve all experienced it. We hit a certain weight, and we just get stuck. The weight doesn’t come back, but we can’t seem to take any off. I’ve recently had this experience myself.

For a month, I stared at the same number on the scale, and I waited…and waited…and waited. I walked, and I counted calories. I ate more salads and vegetables and fewer carbs. I went back to the scale and stared at the same number again. I expressed frustration to those closest to me who knew what I was doing. Still the number didn’t change.

Then I got up one morning, and I got the payoff. The number was dropping again. All my hard work, patience, and perseverance paid off this weekend when I stepped on the scale and the number finally changed! Counterintuitively, part of me wanted to celebrate by eating something unhealthy, but I refrained in the name of progress. I would have done that in the past, but I’m older and wiser (at least about weight loss). I cheered myself on and reminded myself that I had more distance to travel so let’s not sabotage it.

There are going to be times when it feels like all the hard work of exercise and healthy eating isn’t making a difference, but just stick with it. The progress is coming. Don’t give up! I’m right there with you. I know how hard it is. You’ve got this! [210.8]

Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, CSB)
