Yesterday, I kept sifting through ideas in my mind as I tried to choose a topic for today’s post, and nothing seemed like a good idea. This morning, I started my computer and went right to my email to check messages, and it occurred to me – not for the first time – that success happens in the daily regular tasks we do to stay on track. It isn’t glamorous, and it’s often quite boring. However, taking care of the daily tasks keeps me from getting stressed when I work on other jobs.
I don’t always keep an exact written schedule, but I do keep a list of things I need to do each week. Between daily tasks and the goals on my weekly list, I manage to stay busy yet adaptable. I can move my schedule around to accommodate unexpected duties that arise, and as long as I do my daily tasks, I can work on my weekly list throughout each day. It is just the plain old, ordinary things I do every day and every week that keep me going.

When I originally left working full-time for someone else, I found it difficult to create a schedule. I had to remind myself that I left working for other people to break the rigid time control I lived in according to someone else’s schedule because I needed to be a more present caregiver to the elder members of my family. Being a self-employed caregiver doesn’t mean that my regular work responsibilities go away. It just means I can do those tasks at my own pace, but I still prefer to keep my daily and weekly lists because I’m a goal-oriented person.
Whether we work for someone else, are a stay-at-home parent, or work for ourselves, those daily duties often make a world of difference. My daily tasks remind me I am getting something done each day even when I don’t feel like I’m accomplishing much. When you’re feeling like you aren’t doing anything, remind yourself that completing those daily goals is a win. You don’t need fireworks or accolades to know you’ve done something well. Keep moving forward with “the daily.”
