Sometimes, we can have a mental block when it comes to taking care of ourselves. We want to put work, family, or friends first, and we use them as reasons not to take care of ourselves physically. I had to change my mindset about this when I restarted my health and fitness journey this year.

First, I reminded myself that I was no good to anyone or anything I cared about if I didn’t take care of myself. Let’s be honest. If we don’t take care of ourselves, we don’t feel like doing things with or for our family and friends. If we aren’t in good physical condition, our work will suffer because we can’t do all the things we want to do.
Second, I changed my perception of the journey. I stopped seeing it as only a weight loss journey and started recognizing it as a process of helping my body do all the amazing things it was made to do. Weight loss is only part of it. I also need to improve my flexibility, add some muscle definition, improve my cardio endurance, and improve my body to help prevent future accidental injuries. If we only look at one aspect of the journey, we miss out on key features that matter in the long run.
Third, I realized that the physical journey needed to be balanced by the mental and spiritual. I decided to become my own cheerleader about working out especially when the weight loss is slow. When I’m tempted to not exercise, I remind myself that it’s all about the process, and I can either extend the process by exercising less frequently or keep the process going steadily by exercising when scheduled. I found that success in the physical journey has improved my mentality and encouraged a deeper exploration of my faith. What can God use me to do when I’m operating at maximum health and fitness? Health and fitness are as important in your mind and your soul as they are to your physical condition. It’s important to get everything working together.
Each of us has our own reasons for our health and fitness journey. I’ve chosen to only share some of the details with my closest family and friends and with you. I want you to realize that you matter and are worth the time to take care of yourself. I want you to invest time in yourself so you can do all the creative, amazing, and fun things you’ve always wanted to do. I want you to find your reasons. [210.6]

Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, CSB)
