Keys to Success: Don’t Overthink What Doesn’t Need to Be Overplanned

Why is it so easy to overthink an idea until we make it too complicated to accomplish? I don’t know about you, but I am repeatedly guilty of overthinking and overplanning. The worst part is that overthinking and overplanning wind up preventing me from doing the very thing I wanted to do. When I started posting regularly on this blog, I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore. Instead, I just decided to dive right in and get things done.

For someone notorious for overthinking, it came as a real shock to discover that I could get things done without planning every little detail. This isn’t to say that you don’t need to plan ahead. There will always be situations where it is best to have a plan and follow it. However, planning takes time away from the actual activity, and I just found there were situations where I spent too much time planning and not enough time doing.

I suppose thinking and planning too much was a way to maintain what control I thought I had over a situation, but it also paralyzed my ability to accomplish things as I mired myself in the details. This year, I’ve been trying to get things done without wasting too much time planning or thinking beforehand. On that note, I’m going to keep this post short because there is little point in overthinking or over-planning when I’m trying to encourage others to avoid this. Just look at your list of goals and start working on something. Don’t overthink the process.

Inspirational Verses for the Day:

Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. (Colossians 4:5-6, NLT)
