Keys to Success: Prayer (When Faith Is Part of Your Work)

This key may not resonate with everyone, but it matters to me. I write about a variety of topics, and my faith is often an active element within my writing. I don’t believe in forcing anyone to read about faith so I recognize this post might not be to everyone’s taste. If you decide to skip it, I hope you’ll come back to read other keys to success in the coming weeks as my goal is to share what I’ve learned so far. So why is prayer a big part of my writing?

Being a woman of faith, I pray often about the decisions I make whether they are personal or professional. When I have difficulty focusing on my subject matter, I find that prayer gets me back on topic. I don’t separate my faith from other aspects of my life so prayer is an invaluable part of my writing. I take my ideas and concerns to God, and I talk about my plans. God is the best sounding board. He doesn’t belittle me for wild ideas, criticize me as a dreamer, or try to fit me into a box that makes sense to Him. People might do those things, but God does not.

Most of the time after I pray about things, I feel better, and answers seem to come more easily. Sometimes after I pray, I realize I need to back away from the project for a bit because distance gives me a different perspective. Prayer has even helped me find a new angle on a topic, and then a post goes in a completely different direction than I originally planned. I find prayer to be essential to my writing. I wrote the first two paragraphs of this post, and then I hit a writing block. I went to make supper, prayed about it, and enjoyed my meal with family. When I returned after completing some other tasks, I suddenly figured out what else to say.

Whether you are a person of faith or not, we all have our practices which help us to become better at what we do. Praying to God is a regular practice for me in all aspects of my life, and I believe it makes me a better writer. Prayer is what helped me realize I wanted my writing to help other people by sharing knowledge. If you are a person of faith, don’t neglect the habit of regular prayer when it comes to your work because it can make a difference.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NKJV)
