Today as I was helping a family member with something, I had to stop and catch my breath. When they asked me if I was okay, I said, “Just give me a moment.” I closed my eyes and took a couple of deep, slow breaths, and then we finished our task. It reminded me that sometimes we just need a minute.
As I get older, I find I need more of those moments than I used to. I need to step outside and get away from people. I need to go eat lunch somewhere else instead of hanging around my office. I need to hold up my face, let the sun warm it, and block out the world. I need a minute with God.
Jesus would occasionally go off by Himself to pray according to the Word.
So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. (Luke 5:16, NKJV)
Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. (Luke 6:12, NKJV)
Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. (Mark 1:35, NKJV)
If Jesus needed to be alone so He could pray, then it stands to reason that we need those moments as well. We need those times in which we pull away for a bit and just sit with the Lord and talk things through without distraction. If you are at work and find yourself needing to be alone, it’s okay. Go find a quiet bathroom stall, storage closet, or outdoor space. Take a moment. Breathe deeply. Pray.
