Of all the things that I have learned from other content creators, consistency is vital, and this is one of the major things I worked on in 2024. I developed a regular schedule for blog posts starting in July, and I added another blog post to it in October. Except during the Christmas holidays, I stuck to that writing schedule. Sometimes I wrote posts ahead, and sometimes I wrote them the day of publication. The point was that I posted them as planned.
Why does consistency even matter? First, people know to expect content a set number of days a week. I know this matters because I’m slowly growing subscribers and readers because I’m posting on a regular basis. When I started my blog, I was rarely consistent, and I often didn’t have returning readers. I wasn’t a reliable writer so readers couldn’t depend on me when I only wrote random posts. Second, consistency allows us to remember what we are writing about from one week to the next. A regular writing schedule helped me realize how often I was repeating myself so I created a spreadsheet to help spread out my topics. Finally, consistency taught me that my writing matters. If I was willing to stick to an actual schedule, it dawned on me that I was taking my writing and readers seriously.
Can I improve my consistency? Yes, I could improve by posting at the same time each day that I plan to publish. However, if readers are subscribed, they will receive an email as soon as a post is published so posting at the same time of day may not be as important as posting on the same days each week. At this point, I may not always have my information ready to go by a time deadline so I’m not going to stress myself on being that precise.
If you think about it, this doesn’t just apply to writers or other content creators. Consistency matters in any work that we do. When we are reliable employees, coworkers, and managers, people know they can depend on us. It’s a good quality to add to your list. While it might not fall under a hard skill, it is a soft skill only some people possess. Use consistency to your advantage no matter what career field you are in because it builds trust.
