Today was the first day since the holidays that I felt like I was getting back on track. I pulled out my notebook and wrote down everything I knew I needed to work on. Then I started working on simple tasks first.
Staring at me from the list was the need for a “blog post subject list.” That’s my language for creating a spreadsheet that lists the subjects of each of the blog posts I’ve written. This might seem like an odd thing to do, but I had started wondering how many times I was repeating my subject matter since I wasn’t tracking my topics. I took the time today to knock out this fairly quick task, and I proved what I suspected. I have been repeating myself.
As I work to grow and improve my blogs, I want to include a variety of topics, and it isn’t like I don’t have plenty of ideas. At the top of my current Word document there are five pages of ideas from last year and this year. I have all kinds of ideas, but for some reason, I kept falling back on the same subjects. That’s why I created my spreadsheet, and now I can track my topics to write more original content.
Sometimes, we set out to do something, and we keep going back to what we know instead of moving forward. I think I got myself into a subject rut as I learned more about what I wanted to do. Making a simple list helped me recognize my pattern so I can pull from my new ideas instead.
If you are a content creator looking for ways to improve, make a list to see if you are canvassing the same topics. If you work in another field and find yourself bored from the repetition, ask yourself if there is a new way to perform the task, a different way to deliver the goods, or even a new place to sit while working. Sometimes we get stuck in the grind as we work, and it’s all about recognizing it and trying something else. Try searching for a new way to break up the repetition.
