Reevaluating a Relationship with Social Media

After reviewing more tips from What Color Is Your Parachute?, I’m reconsidering my relationship with social media. I’ve never been one for sharing personal details that affect those close to me so I’ve always approached social media accounts with caution. I’ll continue to be careful about family information online, but following the tips from the Parachute playbook, I will be reconsidering how I present myself in a professional way. If I do return to working for a company or office, I’ll need an online presence, but even if I intend to support myself as a freelance writer, I still need a professional persona online.

I’ve been looking at my online social media accounts. I don’t have very many, but at least, I can clean them up before I decide whether to add more. I can use those accounts to my advantage by presenting my professional experience where others can easily access it.

I’ve also been reevaluating my personal social media accounts, and it occurs to me that I need to clean those accounts up a bit. I often find social media to be exhausting and negative so I tend to stay away from the platforms to avoid being pulled into unwanted conversations. I still probably won’t spend much time on certain accounts, but this is a good opportunity to evaluate where that negativity comes from and make some appropriate decisions about how to eliminate it.

While it might be a process, especially if you are an avid social media user, maybe it’s time to evaluate your social media accounts and ask yourself if they present the professional and personal story that you want out there. Things that didn’t bother you five years ago have a way of creeping back into your timelines when you least expect it so make certain that you periodically check in to see what is showing. While our past shouldn’t define us, it’s important that we use any situation – in person, by email or phone, or via social media – to present who we truly are. Reevaluate those social media accounts just to be sure a less mature version of you isn’t fleshing out your timeline.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV)
