Finding Fulfillment

Just recently, I had an important realization. I’m feeling more fulfilled than I ever have before, and it doesn’t have anything to do with being part of the 9-to-5 work cycle.  I’m setting my own work schedule, spending time with and helping family, volunteering with church activities and with others who need assistance, crafting during my free time, and completing long unfinished projects. I stepped away from the accepted “normal” routine in our society, and while I’m admittedly living on a smaller budget, I’m so much happier than before. This is what my idea of success looks like.

I’m able to be there for others while making a career transition. I no longer regret not being with my family or friends because work interfered. While I’m still laying the foundation for my new career, I’m already happier than I was before, and my stress level is noticeably lower.

Recently, I watched a YouTube video in which this creator really got me to thinking about what a job actually is and what purpose it serves. She reminded me of this tragic story that many heard about an employee found deceased at her desk after four days. As a Christian, I should commit to doing my job well, but I don’t believe that means we have to remain where we are stressed, time-constrained, unappreciated, bullied, and/or underpaid.

If you are considering a job or career change, be certain that you are considering the issues that mean the most to you. Are you looking for a more supportive working environment? Are you looking for better pay without destructive management practices? Do you need more time for your family? Be sure to consider elements outside of work that are impacted by your job.

The benefit of getting older is experience. We look back and recognize where we made wrong turns, and we can compensate in our decisions now. If you are younger and changing careers, I encourage you to look at those aspects now. There is no amount of money or prestige that will fix not being there for the people you love because of work. Make sure that your career choices allow you to find both personal and professional fulfillment.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2, NKJV)
