Practical Matters

I wrote my first blog post on this site in 2016. Initially, I was just looking for a place to vent as I was confronting a career change, but the career change took longer than expected. It took six more years to come about, but I did leave my library career behind. I still appreciate everything I learned in my career, but I don’t miss the tougher parts of customer service. Plus, I’m having a good time learning about new career fields and freelance writing, blogging, and content creation.

If you have read many of my posts, you have noticed that I’ve gone around and around trying to find my niche, developing consistency, and committing to the process. Over the last few years, I’ve tried to develop my skills of self-awareness, and you can find that in the posts that I have written on self-evaluation. I’m trying to more openly recognize and address my strengths and weaknesses so I can incorporate them into my writing. I have spent a lot of time learning from other content creators whether they are bloggers or YouTube vloggers, and this is where some age and wisdom have helped. Instead of following the flashy content creators, I’ve found several people who are far more interested in sharing their knowledge than with just making money. Those fellow creators have been very helpful for me as I have continued to develop my content into something worth sharing.

As a writer, I’m infamous for making notes on napkins, sticky notes, envelopes, notepads, and any other piece of paper I can get my hands on. When I don’t have paper at hand immediately, my notes app on my phone becomes the go-to place for me to write down quick ideas. Recently, I started a list of things that I have learned from fellow content creators that I found inspiring, and then I added a few things that mattered to me. All of them are very practical steps that I can take by myself to make my freelance writing more profitable in the long-term.

In the coming weeks, I will be wrapping up the series of posts on self-evaluation, and I will be sharing the things that I’ve learned from and information about the content creators who have taught me valuable lessons. As a librarian, I’ve never thought of knowledge as something to be hidden away so I want to share these lessons with you. Even if you aren’t a writer, there are still skills that will apply if you are starting a small business or starting a new career. Plus, it is nice to just know that someone else is out there trying something new because then we don’t feel so alone in the process.
