Let’s Get Moving

Last week, I wrote about using print calendars and schedules to stay on top of my daily activities, and I stand by all of the color-coded and scheduled tasks on my list because it gives me focus. One of the important tasks I included on my daily list was exercise because I practically have to force myself to do it. I won’t say that I hate exercise because I don’t like the word hate, but I can confidently say that I loathe exercise.

Don’t get me wrong! I appreciate how much better I feel when I’m in shape, and I enjoy feeling better when I lose weight. I just loathe the process it takes to get there. Unlike some people, I dislike almost every second of a workout. I only do it because I’d like to live longer by taking care of myself. You won’t find anyone picking me to advertise their newest exercise app or workout equipment because they would be hard-pressed to market the woman that says, “I loathe working out, but this app made the misery seem organized and easy to track.”

Despite my distasteful feelings for exercise, my ‘science brain’ recognizes that sometimes we just have to do things we don’t like to do, and that is why there is a one-hour block carved out five days a week to remind me to exercise. Eventually, I would like to add a walking pad treadmill under my tall desk so I can do research and write while I get some exercise. Even I know that moving some is better than not moving at all, but for now, I put it on my calendar to remind myself that I need to schedule some physical activities each day.

If you find that you are spending more time at your desk as a freelancer and there are a few more pounds of you than there used to be, just remember to schedule some time at least five days a week to get moving again. I’d like to think that as I walk away from one career into another that I can walk away a few pounds in the process. Don’t forget that it’s important to keep your mind, heart, AND body healthy and working together for that career change.

Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16, CSB)
