Get Something Done

Anything. It doesn’t matter what. Just find a project you’ve been working on and finish it. There is something refreshing and inspiring about completing a project that’s been sitting around.

As I’m in the midst of a learning process, I have a lot of different ideas going, and sometimes it feels like I’m doing a thousand different things without getting anything done. It isn’t true. All those things are pushing my goals along a little at a time, but it can feel discouraging when I’m not seeing any end results yet.

On days like that, I make a list of things that I know I need to do that can be done in a short amount of time, and I work on that list. Seeing a column of tasks with a check mark next to them helps me recognize that at least some things are being completed. I also have a short list of craft ideas that include incomplete projects. This year, I have already knocked out three of those items, and I have four more to go. Plus, sometimes I just pick up my crochet hook and make a small project that can be completed over a few hours. The sense of completion feels good, and I can move on to one of my continuing projects.

My blogs are a labor of work and love, and I’ve always wanted to be the kind of writer that kept ahead on my posts. I haven’t reached that point yet, but I’m working on it. I’ve written this post during a particularly busy time, and it will be part of a series of blog posts that will have been written and scheduled in advance. I’m excited that I’m finally hitting a point where I can do that, but I had to go backwards a bit with my blogging to get this set up.

If you feel overwhelmed right now, back away from whatever is stressing you out and making you feel like nothing is getting done. Go do something from start to finish. Go fold and put away a load of laundry. Write a journal entry about the past week without stopping. Finish reading that book on your nightstand that you only have five chapters left to read. Watch a movie you’ve been meaning to stream. Crochet that next granny square for a blanket. Pay that bill you’ve had on your mind for the past three days. It doesn’t matter what it is. Just go complete something so you can feel that good feeling of getting something done. Then you can pick back up and keep working on the long-term project. Before you know it, that long-term project will be in your rearview mirror.
