Focus, Write, Repeat

If you’re going to be a writer, you have to do one simple thing – WRITE.

It looks absurd as I stare at that sentence on the screen, but it is the one thing that I’m struggling to do. I need to schedule more time focused just on writing. I’ve been so busy trying to do other things that I’m not doing the one thing that I really want to do as a career.

This week, I’ve been trying to focus more on setting time aside to write. It doesn’t matter what I write because that isn’t the point. I’ve just been trying to make myself buckle down and write anything. The results could be better, but they could be worse.

I’ve also given myself permission not to have my blog posts scheduled the day before they are published this week. Instead, I am writing and publishing them according to what is going on at the time. I’m not concerned with a precise time right now. I just want to be sure that I’m writing. I’ll worry about precise scheduling later.

I’ve started making lists of future topics, and I’m keeping notes about ideas that interest me so I can’t say that I don’t have enough material. I’m evaluating “time-wasting” activities during the day. If I could be writing, then I’m trying to make myself stop and write. The point is to focus and write.

If you are in the process of a career change and finding your focus lagging, are you worrying about things that don’t matter right now? Are you wasting too much time doing unnecessary things? Do you need to spend more time focusing on steps to make that career change happen?

I know that I need to work on my process, write more, educate myself, and look for more paid writing opportunities. It’s all very new to me, but it’s rather exciting when I don’t let myself get overwhelmed. If you’re overwhelmed, then I would suggest always starting with the things that need to be done first. Make sure daily necessities are taken care of first.  Then you have less to stress about. Find and utilize learning opportunities even if it’s a YouTube video. Most importantly, begin to take the small steps into that new career field. Research and ask questions. Talk to people.

If you’re going into writing, be sure to make time to write. Once this post is published, I’m going to spend an hour writing. I don’t know what I’ll write, but I will write. It’s all part of the process: focus, write, repeat.

Inspirational Verses for the Day:

Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established. Don’t turn to the right or to the left; keep your feet away from evil. (Proverbs 4:25-27, CSB)
