Keep the Notebook Handy

I keep my hedgehog notebook close by at all times. It’s an adorable little journal with tiny little hedgehogs all over the cover, but that’s not the point. I keep it within reach all the time because I never know when inspiration will hit. If you are a writer, this is already second nature to you because inspiration can hit at the oddest times. I’ve even had to pull over while I was driving to write down an idea. Even if you aren’t a writer, you still need to keep a notebook handy because, if a good business idea strikes, you don’t want to forget it. I keep my notebook in basically the same place all the time because I don’t want to forget an idea while I’m looking for the notebook.

Recently, I was feeling overwhelmed because I had so many ideas floating around in my head that they were tumbling over one another. I grabbed my notebook and began to write them down, and the ideas continued to expand. It is already the beginning of an outline if I go ahead and write the idea down when I first think of it. I have so many ideas to try that I’ll be working on them for years to come, but that’s okay because I know that I have goals to work toward.

If you are leaving the standard workplace and striking out on your own, your ideas matter! Writing them down makes them feel like a concrete concept that you thought of, and it means you can come back and find them at any time. Whatever your writing medium, whether a paper notebook/journal, an app on your phone, or a program on your laptop, write down your ideas. You thought of it, and it deserves consideration. I used to think that my ideas didn’t matter, but as I have read and watched the content of others, I realized that I had something to share as well. I’m not an expert in changing careers, but I am going through it so I can share that with other people changing careers or contemplating it.

I write down my ideas, and I encourage you to do the same thing. As I have written down my ideas, I have realized what things I am truly interested in. If I write down an idea, I eventually realize the interest that I actually have in completing it or bringing it to fruition. If I just keep bumping it down the list, it might be an indication that it isn’t an idea I’m interested in, but it was just an idea I had. Maybe I can pass it on to someone else who could follow through later.

Make your ideas concrete by putting them on paper (or screen). Encourage yourself that YOUR IDEAS MATTER. Keep that notebook, phone, or laptop handy so you can track those ideas. You never know when your one little spark will turn into a business-sized blaze for you.
